We have invited Ms. Zerlina Leung of Conservation Sew Mates to lead workshops for local volunteers to teach them handicraft skills used to produce handsewn souvenirs of thresher sharks and mantas. These souvenirs can be sold by the volunteers as a means to generate supplemental income for their families. Sale of each souvenir will also be accompanied with an infosheet on the thresher sharks and mantas of Malapascua and we hope to raise more public awareness on the nature of these pelagic creatures and the realisation that their natural habitats must be minimally perturbed by human activity.
Zerlina has conducted similar workshops throughout the Philippines and they have received much local support from communities where dive tourism is an important source of income.
Visit the Conservation Sew Mates site for more information on their activities.
